Fighting Lights

Usually the northern lights are drowned out by a full moon, however that wasn't the case this August when I saw them in Copper Harbor, Michigan. Normally you shoot away from bright lights for night photography but I decided to switch it up and take a shot of the full moon and the northern lights. I loved how the northern lights and the full moon fought to be the brightest light.

Dancing In The Sky

It always pays to check the northern lights forecast when you are out and about in northern locations. I checked the apps and to my surprise it said it was a predicted KP7 and they were observing a KP7. The higher the KP the better. My husband and I jumped up from our campfire and looked to the north. We didn't see much and thought it was a glitch, so we went back to the campfire. Less than an hour later the skies exploded! You could see the northern lights above your head, to the east and west AND to the south. It was simply amazing. The sky danced with greens and we were just in awe. I couldn't believe how well you could see the lights with the full moon. This is one of the many shots I took that night or rather very early morning. I can't pick a favorite so bear with me as I will share more. This shot is looking to the south-southwest.

The aurora borealis hid behind some clouds during an almost full moon at Miners Castle in Munising, Michigan on October 13th 2016 about 8:30pm.

Earth's Spin

Star trails are caught by a long exposure photograph or photographs. The camera makes it look like the stars are moving around the North Star but in reality it is the earth's rotation causing this spinning appearance. You can view the "spinning" of the stars with the naked eye by finding the Milky Way and observing the movement over time. This photograph is a stack of 399 images, giving 2 hours and 13 minutes of movement. A brief appearance of the northern lights is always a welcomed treat! Northport, Michigan October 2017

The Light Above The Light

One of the most rememberable nights in my life. The northern lights danced in the sky with no rhyme or reason above the Copper Harbor Lighthouse; a few weeks ago. My husband and I were spinning in circles, saying things like "look at that," "oh look at THAT," "WOW, look at it." Looking back on it, we sounded pretty silly but it was so awesome, we just couldn't help ourselves!
