Blue Ice piles up near the Mackinac Bridge in the Straits of Mackinac. Some ice was 24 inches thick and some piles were taller than 30 feet.
Jagged pieces of blue ice fought for space near the Mackinac Bridge last winter during a somewhat rare phenomenon. The ice appears blue because the lack of oxygen in the ice. These blue ice piles were stacked in some places more than 30 feet tall and the ice itself ranged from paper thin to more than 24 inches thick.
The beautiful wet snow stuck to everything it could. I loved the contrast of the snow and the open water. Although, this shot could almost pass as a black and white image it is actually in color.
