The areas in and around the Straits of Mackinac are filled with rocky reefs/shoals. To protect larger boats from the reefs they used Lightships to warn them of these underground hazards. However, large storms would often move these anchored lightships and the lightships sailors didn't much care for the weather either. So the decision was made to build physical lighthouses on these shoals/reefs. Completed in 1928, Poe Reef Lighthouse sits south of Mackinac Island in Lake Huron and was named after General Orlando M. Poe, who was the designer of many Michigan Lighthouses.
