I knew the falls would be raging because of the recent rain but I had no idea how much. Well I got my answer when I drove over the bridge above the falls and the river's waves were crashing over the bridge. Once I got to the base of the falls, it wasn't the typical beautiful cascading falls we all know and love. The whole area was flooded and the pool at the base of the falls had 1 foot waves in it. I walked over to the stairs to see if I could go up to see the falls from the side and saw this view.
I knew the sunset was going to be very colorful so I quickly jumped in the car and started driving around to find something of interest, not wanting to waste this beautiful sunset. I knew there were sunflower fields around but couldn't find them in time. I passed this soybean field that was perfect for a great wide angle shot and just had to turn around and shoot it. I am thankful I did. This photograph encapsulates the beauty of the Midwest.
I love getting in the water to photograph waterfalls and the more and more I did it I started to notice the beauty of a waterfall was more than just the falls itself. Sometimes the pool or shoreline would have sharp jagged rocks, some would have small colorful pebbles and some would have a sandy bottom. I loved the ideal that I could display what I was feeling under my feet. So after a year of planning and practice I came away with this idea and shot. It is something that I have never seen done before but loved that I could show you both the bottom and topside of the waterfall.
